I've been studying paganism since High School (I used to bring books to school and read/take notes during my Senior Open period!). I performed a self-dedication my Freshman year of college and have been practicing at varying degrees of intensity ever since. I would love to just be open and up front about my beliefs, but I used to work part time in the educational sector, and while the Bay Area is a pretty tolerant and open place, there are plenty of psycho fundies here and I felt it was better all around if I kept my religious beliefs to myself. Although I am now out of the educational sector, coming out is taking a lot of baby steps right now, and I will be keeping my legal name off this site for the time being. I don't really want to be an in-yer-face Wiccan, mostly because in-yer-face Christians annoy the @#%(& out of me. Also, I'm not out to my family really (although they MUST know I study because I have never bothered to hide my books or altar).
I have a large public website under my real name which lots of people I work with know about, so I don't have anything about my religion there. But I'm a blogger at heart, and I really want to connect with other Wiccans and Pagans out there (especially rational ones!). Plus, there's something about blogging that keeps me thinking about things and helps me work through stuff better than it would if I were just using a physical journal. I'm not good at choosing usernames because I usually just use my real name. This is the first time I've had to come up with one that had no association with me, and I kinda botched it.
See, I'm a Wiccan in the broadest sense of the word. I venerate a Goddess who is associated with Earth, Water, the Moon, and the Maid/Mother/Crone triad, and a God who is associated with Fire, Air, the Sun, and the Youth/Father/Elder triad. They are very difficult to define, as Gods should be. I respect the Elements; cast a Circle for big, formal rituals; use an athame; do spells; and many books on Wicca resonate with me.
On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of groups, group work, initiation, oaths of secrecy, etc. etc. etc.. I think Gardner created Wicca out of a mishmash of other things and was, on some level, kind of a dirty old man. You will never convince me that going skyclad was really The One True Way To Do Ritual for thousands of years - it's too damn cold in the British Isles for that. I'm a practical witch - I probably do more spells than full-on rituals, and my daily prayers are very simple. For me, religion is between me and the Divine, and I'm not terribly interested in being told deep, dark secrets by the Special Coven of the Hooglyboo Forest or whatever. So I guess really I'm more of a hedge witch than a Wiccan. I certainly like Rae Beth's books far more than, say, Buckland's.
I don't want people to see my name and think, "Oh, a crufty old BTW!" or something. Or, for that matter, "Oh, a nerdy fluffbunny!" But on the other hand, I am way too lazy/cheap to change my name at this point. If it causes too many misunderstandings, I will change, but until then, RationalWiccan it is, or Rational for short.
